What does the School Counselor do?
Our goal as School Counselors is to meet the needs of your children personally/socially, academically and prepare them to be career ready. We are using the following strategies to meet these goals:
Small Group Counseling, Counselors meet with teachers to determine what topics best fit a
specific student population's needs. Small group counseling allows we the opportunity to work with
students that have similar goals.
Classroom-Based Counseling, common topics include: character education, making and
keeping friends, positive school behaviors, and bullying prevention. At Walnut Creek Counselors
rotate on the "Specials" rotation.
Individual Counseling, a student is referred by their parent, teacher, or
administration. Students can also request to see the Counselors. Students come to the office to talk
about things that impact their learning at school, such as friendships, study skills, and
conflict resolution. In the Counseling Office, student know that what we discuss is confidential unless someone is hurting them, they are hurting themselves and/or they want to cause harm to others.
Consultation, The Counselors communicate regularly with parents/guardians to address any concerns they may have regarding their child’s education. The counselor also consults with administrators, teachers, and staff members to ensure a positive educational experience for all students.
Coordination, The Counselors coordinate many programs and school wide events. Ms. McCallum and Mrs. Morgan are the 504 contacts. Some of the events we plan are "Careers on Wheels" and "Career Day," we arrange visits to Middle Schools for our 5th grade students, literacy events, and parent involvement events. We implement school wide character education programs. The Counselors also coordinate programs with community members such as “Backpack Buddies” and school supplies drives.
